Iowa told to pay $576,000 after audit

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- A federal audit says Iowa needs to repay more than $500,000 in misspent funds from the 2002 Help America Vote Act.

Iowa received about $30 million from the act which was aimed at updating voting systems after the 2000 presidential election.

The audit found $2.5 million was misspent, but lowered Iowa's bill to $576,000.

The audit lists three reasons why payments were not allowed.

Bids were not sought for a contract associated with the grant, a program called "Celebrate Voters" spent money on non-voter activities and radio ads were not considered allowable expenses.
