WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The oil leak in the gulf has had a ripple effect in eastern Iowa.

Rebecca Kauten, the President of the Cedar River Festival Group, says more people are becoming more aware of the environment and how fragile it really is.

The Cedar River Festival Group was created in the 1980's and for 22 years they have been going up and down the Cedar River clearing it's banks and tributaries of garbage and other debris.

Kauten says her group is vigilant and all of their hard work over the past couple years is paying off.

"It's kind of funny because it's disappointing for some volunteers because they want to come in with a canoe full of trash and say look what we did. We're getting to the point where some of the routes are getting clean and so it's doing its job. It's one of those organizations you hope works itself out of business," said Kauten.

The next river clean-up day for the Cedar River Festival Group is July 31st. They will be focusing on the Cedar River between Gateway Park in Cedar Falls and Exchange Park in Waterloo.
