Petition to repeal "21 and over" in Iowa City gets new life

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The movement to repeal Iowa City's "21 and over" bar ordinance has gained new life.

Raj Patel, co-founder of Y.E.S.S. to 19, told KWWL Tuesday that his group has turned in 3,440 more signatures to the Iowa City Clerk's Office.

Earlier this month, Patel's group found out that more than half of the signatures they had collected earlier, were invalid, leaving them well short of the 2,500 required to put the measure on the November ballot.

Patel says his group went through the latest signatures and crossed out all the ones that were unreadable or not from voters registered in Iowa City.

He adds that it's encouraging to see that nearly every age and neighborhood in Iowa City is represented on the petitions and that the median age of those signing the petition is 27.

Patel says his group will find out by June 30th if they have collected enough signatures to get the measure on the November ballot.
