MOUNT PLEASANT (KWWL) -- The first woman in modern times to be admitted to a state bar in the U.S. was Arabella Aurelia Babb Mansfield.  Mansfield was admitted at Mount Pleasant June 15, 1869, in spite of a state statute admitting only "white males."

Mansfield graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College three years prior and instructed at Simpson College for a year.

Mansfield and her husband both passed the bar exam in June of 1869.  They both later taught at Iowa Wesleyan before moving to Indiana to teach.  She was inducted into the Iowa Women's Hall of Fame in 1980.
