Flash flooding hits Oklahoma

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (KWWL) -- Flash flooding and lightning storms throughout Oklahoma caused problems for both commuters and fire crews Monday morning.

Oklahoma City Police Lt. Gamille Hardin said 2 to 6 inches of rain fell in only 3 hours, which forced several highways to shut down Monday morning.  Officials said that anywhere between 1 and 3 more inches of rain per hour fell as the storm continued for a total of 6 hours.

While inspectors looked at the rising water level in a nearby dam, fire crews went door to door asking people to evacuate immediately.  Many areas were immediately submerged with water levels well above the roofs of many cars.

So far no injuries have been reported, but many rescues were made.  Fire crews rescued at least 50 drivers from their cars.

Most of the city is also suffering from power outages due to the lightning storms.
