Improved Iowa City Public Library opened in 2004

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- After more than two years of construction the doors opened to the improved Iowa City Public Library building June 12, 2004.

An $18.4 million bond referendum was passed in 2000 to pay for the library.  The people who run the library say public libraries are more important than ever in this time of state education cuts.

The new expanded library featured 48 public internet access computers, self check out stations and a much larger children's room.

In 2004, the Iowa City Library had about 220,000 books in circulation with more than 63,000 card holders.

Improvements continue to be made to the facility.  New self-check out stations were installed in 2010.

An interesting bit of trivia, the library at 123 S. Linn St. opened its doors to the public June 14, 1981 after moving across the street from the old library.  So, if the library had waited two more days to open the improved facility in 2004, it would have been exactly 23 years to the day after the building first opened.
