Teens arrested, charged with gang recruitment

IOWA CITY (KWWL)--- Iowa City police have arrested and charged five juveniles for trying to recruit others into a gang.  Saturday evening around 10 p.m., officers saw a group of eight to ten juveniles arguing in the 1900 block of Broadway Street.  As the fight was appearing to turn physical, officers intervened and several of the juveniles fled.

During their investigation, authorities determined that the individuals had been previously identified as being associated with a group known as the "Broadway Goons."   The group was trying to recruit a new member by having that individual start a fight.

Based upon prior police involvement with the "Broadway Goons," and the investigation into Saturday's incident, the five juveniles arrested were charged with felony gang recruitment-conspiracy.  The juveniles range in age from 12 to 15, and are all of Iowa City or Coralville.
