Superintendent named to Independence schools

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (AP) -- A Northeast Iowa school district has named a new superintendent.

Jean Peterson was chosen this week to head Independence Community School District, which has about 1,350 students.

She'll replace Devin Embray who is leaving for a job in Glidden.

She says her first priority is to meet with community members.

Peterson will earn about $115,000 a year.

For three years, Peterson has been the superintendent of the Martensdale-St. Mary's school district, which has about 500 students.

Before that she was a school administrator for Saydel schools for 16 years. Her positions included assistant principal and director of curriculum and student services.
