Grassley asks for registration extension for farmers

WASHINGTON (KWWL) -- Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to allow a late fee for farmers who missed the sign up deadline for two farming programs.

Farmers registering for the Direct and Counter-cyclical Payment Program and the Average Crop Revenue Election Program were given until June 1 to sign up.  In years past, the deadline had been in August and September and also had an extended registration period.  Farmers who missed the first deadline were allowed to sign up until the extended deadline if they agreed to pay $100 per filing.

The Farm Service Agency has removed the extended deadline this year, leaving many farmers unable to register.  Some have written into Sen. Grassley who then wrote a letter to Secretary Tom Vilsack expressing his concern.  Grassley agrees with the June 1 deadline, but is asking that the extended deadline be brought back as an option for farmers.
