Local food directories released

WAUKON (KWWL) -- The Northeast Iowa "Buy Fresh Buy Local" chapter of the Northeast Iowa Food & Farm Coalition has released this year's Local Food Directory.

The Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture shows that Iowa imports more than 80 percent of their food from other states.  The center says food that is imported travels an average of 1,500 miles to reach Iowa grocery stores whereas locally grown food only travels an average of 56 miles.  Advocates also say locally grown food brings in more money for the farmer as well as the local economy.

The Local Food Directory is a way for consumers to find products grown and sold in their area.

The directories are available from ISU Extension offices or Economic Development office and online at www.iowafreshfood.com – click on Finding Local Food.
