Donations needed for "After Fire" kits

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The Cedar Rapids and Marion Fire Departments, along with other members of the Juvenile Fire Setter Coalition, are joining together to provide "After Fire" kits to fire victims.

The kits, which include things like shampoo, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, calling cards, gift certificates for food, children's toys, diapers, and other everyday necessities, will be donated to the Salvation Army for distribution.

While the main goal of the Juvenile Fire Setter Coalition is to prevent fires set by kids, they understand that people are impacted by other types of fires.

The "After Fire" kits provide families with information about starting the recovery process and provide some basic essentials needed immediately after a fire.

Kids who have played with or set fires will help assemble the kits in an effort to help them understand the impact of fire on individuals, families and the community.

Any person or company interested in helping with this project can bring donations to the Marion Fire Department display at the Downtown Marion Farmers Market on June 12, 2010 or the Cedar Rapids Fire Department display at the Downtown Farmers Market on June 19, 2010.

Donations can also be dropped off at the Cedar Rapids Fire Department, 1010 1st Street NW.

Suggested donations include any of the basic living essentials or gift cards.

Other members of the coalition include, St. Luke's Hospital, Mercy Medical Center, Linn County Juvenile Court Services, Abbe Center, Linn County Department of Human Services, Kirkwood Community College, University of Iowa Burn Center, Cedar Rapids Police Department and the Salvation Army.
