Dyersville Mayor running for State Treasurer

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Obviously a lot of interesting races across the state Tuesday. One in particular in our own backyard.

Dyersville Mayor Jim Heavens is running for State Treasurer. Several candidates are raising the profile of this race in particular.

Though the State Treasurer position isn't always in the spotlight, Heavens is helping bring attention to the seat. Current State Treasurer Micheal Fitzgerald has been in office for 28 years. He was first elected when Governor Branstad first took office. But Heavens hopes to run against him in November

We met up with heavens at the office Tuesday. He works at United Supplies in Dyersville. He's served as mayor for two terms in one of Eastern Iowa's fastest growing communities. And while he has no direct experience serving as a treasurer, he says he will offer a unique perspective to the state treasurer position.

"I think you have to look for places in Iowa where the deal is working. I mean this is the was I think municipal government and state government should work," Heavens said.

He is of course referring to the successes in Dyersville and he hopes if anything this helps people understand what exactly goes into the job of state treasurer.

As for Tuesday's ballot, Republicans will have to choose between Heavens and David Jamison, a Nevada native.

Tuesday's winner will face 28 year incumbent Fitzgerald.
