Dubuque school walks away from talks to resurrect Alaska school

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) -- An Iowa university is walking away from talks to resurrect Sheldon Jackson College in southeast Alaska, citing lack of support in the community.

University of Dubuque President Jeffrey Bullock announced the decision in an e-mail to Sheldon Jackson's board chairwoman, distributed Monday.

Dubuque appeared to be the most serious suitor for the school, one of Alaska's oldest.

The two sides had been in talks about salvaging at least a part of the Sitka campus, which closed in 2007 amid financial problems. Dubuque was loath to take on new debt, and Sheldon Jackson trustees had been selling off parcels of the campus, trying to pay down a multimillion dollar debt.

Sheldon Jackson President David Dobler said Tuesday he's not sure what the next step will be.
