Iowa inmate sentenced in botched escape

FORT DODGE, Iowa (AP) -- A Fort Dodge woman has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for her role in a botched escape from the Webster County jail that left a jailer injured.

Amanda Bevar was found guilty in April of first-degree robbery, assault with intent to inflict serious injury, escape and assault while participating in a felony. She was sentenced Monday.

Authorities say in August 2009 Bevar overpowered a female correctional officer, choked her and then beat her with the officer's flashlight.

Bevar took the jailer's keys and opened the door of another inmate's cell. Bevar and the second inmate, Jasmine Watts, escaped down a stairwell. Both inmates were captured on the second floor of the building.

Watts was sentenced to seven years in prison in a plea deal in May.
