Iowa lawmaker dies of cancer

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- State Rep. Paul Bell, a Newton Democrat, has died following a battle with cancer.

Bell died on Monday in hospice care in Newton. He was 59.

House Speaker Pat Murphy, D-Dubuque, and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, D-Des Moines, issued a statement saying they were "deeply saddened" by Bell's death.

Bell, a former Newton police officer, served 18 years in the Iowa House, beginning in 1992. He was known for his dedication to the environment, and worked on law enforcement and public safety issues.

Bell is survived by his wife, Niki, and two children.
