Hawkeye Football Players Make Pleas.

Posted:

University of Iowa running back Jewel Hampton has entered a guilty plea to a charge of public intoxication, while defensive back Jordan Bernstine has pleaded not guilty to the same charge.

Court documents say the arrests occurred early Saturday morning at a tavern on the Ped Mall in downtown Iowa City.

Hampton, who is a sophomore, faces a $195 fine on the public intoxication charge. He was also issued a ticket for allegedly violating Iowa City<s new 21-only tavern age ordinance. That ticket carries a $735 fine.

Police say Hampton was arrested after officers responded to a fight in progress.

Officers say Bernstine, who is a junior, was arrested after allegedly hampering their arrest of Hampton.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz has issued a statement saying the matter will be handled internally.
