Car hits girl at D.M. park

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Des Moines police say a man ran a stop sign and plowed into a girl in a park, then dragged her before hitting a tree.

Police say the Sunday afternoon accident left 13-year-old Melissa Ann Robinson of Des Moines in critical condition at Mercy Medical Center.

Witnesses told police the crash happened when a speeding car driven by 45-year-old Joel Robert Simpson of Des Moines ran a stop sign, then drove onto the grass at Union Park. It hit and dragged the girl 75 feet until hitting a tree, causing her to fall away from the vehicle.

Police say the car continued another 150 feet, hitting several trees before stopping.

Simpson was still strapped in his seat belt when medics arrived. He says he didn't recall what happened and was taken to Lutheran Hospital.

Police say alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor, but Simpson was prohibited from driving and has at least four convictions for driving while intoxicated.
