Strawn sets July 10 for possible conventions

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Iowa Republican Party Chairman Matt Strawn says the GOP will hold special nominating conventions July 10 if needed to choose a congressional nominee after Tuesday's primary.

To get the nomination, candidates must claim 35 percent of the votes cast, and that could be difficult in the 3rd and 2nd Districts.

In central Iowa's 3rd District, seven Republicans are competing for the right to oppose Democratic Rep. Leonard Boswell. The leading candidates are former wrestler Jim Gibbons, state Sen. Brad Zaun and conservative activist Dave Funk.

There are four GOP candidates seeking the right to oppose Democratic Rep. Dave Loebsack, also creating the potential that none could get the 35 percent.
