Groundbreaking scheduled for Iowa military center

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -- Officials will soon break ground for the new approximately 113,000-square foot Armed Forces Reserve Center in Cedar Rapids.

The center will include a 9,000-square foot assembly hall, kitchen, classrooms, weapons simulation facility and fitness facility. It will also have an approximately 60,000-sqare foot field maintenance shop with a small arms repair facility and parking for dozens of vehicles.

The project will cost approximately $38 million, which is coming from the federal government.

The groundbreaking event is scheduled for Monday morning.

The project is expected to be completed by September 2011.

Iowa Army National Guard officials say several units will be relocated to the new facility.
