Creativity at My Waterloo Days

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- My Waterloo Days continues with its second day.

Entertainment ranges in price, but much of it is free—including many kid's activities.

In the midst of carnival rides and food vendors, dozens of kids arranged, glued, and ultimately challenged their creativity.

Mel Shivvers has been digging through the garbage to find materials for his booth for 38 years.

He collects materials like old thread spools and wood scraps from dumpsters and carpenters.

There's no rules or instruction at Shivvers' booth.  He just encourages kids just grab a board, glue, and create something.

"They're going to let their imaginations create whatever it is," Shivvers said. "Whatever they want to do. Whatever it is in their mind is what it is on that board. It can be grandfather's farm. It can be a rocket. ANYTHING! It doesn't have to look like that, but in their mind that's what it is."

In nearly 40 years, Mel more than 150,000 children have participated in Shivvers' creative projects.

More than 80 kids stopped to create their own project Saturday morning, and more will be able to stop by on Sunday.
