High Court rules franchise fees collected constitutional

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Iowa Supreme Court has ruled that cities can keep television franchise fees they collected before a law that authorized the fees took effect in 2007.

The lawsuits stemmed from Waterloo, Dubuque, Des Moines and Bettendorf.

The suits claimed the retroactive collection of fees violated constitutional rights.

Lower courts agreed, but Friday the Supreme Court reversed the decisions -- claiming the fees are constitutional.
