Black Hawk Elementary will always remember

WATERLOO (KWWL)-- 60 years of history is coming to an end in Waterloo. Monday will be the last day for school for students at Black Hawk Elementary.

Friday the school held a closing ceremony for students, teachers, and community members.

It was bitter sweet as many students were saying goodbye to their old school. Students and teachers tell us they will always have their black hawk family and plenty of memories.

Doors close Monday on Black Hawk Elementary and all that will be left are memories. In fact this school has been a big part of Barb Patchin's life as both her son and daughter have gone to Black Hawk as well as her husband.

"A lot of memories, in fact a fifth grade teacher here Mrs. Bright. She found one of my son's school papers in her old files and she brought it to me so that was a great memory." said Patchin.

Forth grader Hunter Felice has the same feelings about the school as he remembers meeting his best friend.

"Then all of a sudden a kid named Mason Groning came up.  He said hi what's your name.  I said Hunter and he said hey do you want to go play at recess. I was like sure and from then on we became friends." said Felice.

Many Black Hawk Elementary teachers and students feel as if this school was really a family.

"When you ask people about Black Hawk they say it's family and it's a great school. Family is the word I hear over and over." said Melinda Ostergren, Black Hawk Elementary Principal.

"It is my second family. I love it dearly. Staff is real close and we are real close to the students and their parents. We are going to miss it a lot." said Patchin.

The plan is for Black Hawk Elementary students to combine with Edison Elementary next year.

Black Hawk Elementary is going to be torn down and a new school will be constructed in its place.

It should take two years to complete.
