Iowa National Guard leaders reassigned

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The Iowa Army National Guard has reassigned a colonel who was to command more than 3,100 troops set to deploy for combat duty in Afghanistan.

The Des Moines Register reported in a copyright story Friday that Col. Tom Staton was removed as commander of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 34th Infantry Division because he violated Army regulations.

Command Sgt. Maj. Craig Berte, the brigade's top enlisted soldier, also was replaced.

Col. Gregory Hapgood says the men were reassigned for violating regulations but wouldn't give specifics. He says neither would be court-martialed or face nonjudicial military punishment.

Both men declined to comment.

The brigade includes about 2,800 soldiers from Iowa and 350 from Nebraska. They will be sent to Afghanistan this summer.
