Iowa releases number of voter party changes

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The Secretary of State released the number of voters who changed their party affiliations within the last 12 months in anticipation of Tuesday's Primary Election.

As of June 1, 2010, total voter registration including active and inactive registrants: 

  • No Party: 772,725
  • Democrats: 710,017
  • Republicans: 607,567

The number of registered voters who changed party affiliations since June 8, 2009:

  • No Party to Democrat – 7,112
  • Republican to Democrat – 1,897
  • Democrat to No Party – 9,222
  • Republican to No Party – 7,156
  • No Party to Republican – 8,292
  • Democrat to Republican – 4,896

New registrations over the past 12 months:

  • No Party: 37,931
  • Democrat: 18,254
  • Republican: 17,759

In order to vote in Iowa's Primary Election on June 8, voters must be registered either as a Democrat or as a Republican.
