Broken water main causes sinking school

SIOUX CITY (KWWL) --  Officials in Sioux City say a burst water main has caused a corner of an elementary school to sink into the ground.

Superintendent Paul Gausman says crews have added support beams to prevent further sinking of Everett Elementary.

The problem was first noticed a few weeks ago. It has caused a large crack to appear inside the 100-year-old school, but engineers say the building remains structurally sound.

As a precaution, students and staff are being kept away from that corner of the school.

After more pilings are placed to shore up the building, workers will fix cracks in the wall.

After next year, Everett Elementary will be replaced by a new school.
