Iowa City passes ordinance to restrict panhandling downtown

Posted:

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - On Tuesday night, the Iowa City city council passed a law that will restrict panhandling in downtown.

The law will ban begging for money or panhandling within 10 feet of any building, crosswalk, or ATM.

Many business owners in the downtown area have voiced concern that sidewalk performers and homeless beggars scare customers away.

But those against the law say it infringes upon their civil rights, and makes earning money more difficult for street musicians and performers.

The city has placed purple-colored parking meters around downtown, which people can place money in if they want to donate to street performers or the homeless.
