Name released in deadly Storm Lake boating accident

STORM LAKE (KWWL) – The 10-year-old boy fatally injured Monday in a boating incident on Storm Lake has been identified as David McFarlin of South Sioux City, Neb.

McFarlin was in a boat going across the lake shortly after 10 a.m. when apparently the vessel struck a dredge pipe in the water causing the 175-horsepower outboard motor to flip backwards into the boat and on top of the boy. DNR officials say the dredge pipe was marked with buoys and there are signs posted at each of the boat ramps warning boaters to cross the dredge pipe at no-wake speed.

The boat was operated by Harry Foote, 45, of Lawton. Also in the boat were McFarlin's mother, Jamie Laass, 40, of South Sioux City, Neb and three other children.

The incident remains under investigation.
