Bids delay work on arson-damaged church

BURLINGTON (KWWL) -- Leaders of a downtown Burlington church nearly destroyed by a 2007 arson fire say higher-than-expected construction bids have forced them to postpone work to restore the historic building.

The Rev. Mike Orthel says leaders of the First United Methodist Church had hoped an $8.3 million insurance settlement would be enough to pay for most restoration of the church and improvements to an adjacent building. But bids came in high, so the church has scaled back some plans and rebid the project.

A committee has chosen a construction company, but Orthel decline to name the business.

Orthel hopes work can begin on the 121-year-old church in June.
