Virtual soldier recruited at Ford

DEARBORN, Mich. (KWWL) -- Ford has enlisted the help of a virtual soldier to help make the workload on humans safer.

Santos is a digital avatar originally created for the U.S. Department of Defense at the University of Iowa.  U of I takes part in the Virtual Soldier Research program and had created Santos to help eliminate strain on soldiers through ergonomic research.

Santos is able to execute tasks, walk, talk and even respond to questions.

Ford decided to add Santos to their assembly line in an effort to improve the ergonomics found at its manufacturing plants.  Santos is told to do everyday tasks that a typical worker on a Ford assembly line would do.  He then responds with information as to how much strain the task could put on a human.  This information is studied by ergonomists to figure out less strenuous ways for Ford workers to carry on their assembly work.
