Hazardous material incident in Maquoketa

MAQUOKETA (KWWL) -- Nineteen firefighters reported to a hazardous material call Thursday at the Melling Cylinder Sleeve Company.

A call reported that a lid was blowing off of a stored barrel of unknown product and that the barrel was smoking.  Because the barrel's contents were unknown, the Davenport Hazardous Material team was called in to assist the firefighters.  An ambulance was called in on standby and local authorities helped control traffic.

Workers from the building arrived on the scene as well and moved the smoking barrel with a fork lift.  The workers said that the barrel was full of residue from a previous fire at the plant.  They also said the material had been stored onsite for about 4 months until an insurance settlement could be reached over the barrels.

Upon further investigation, Davenport Haz-Mat discovered another smoking barrel still in the building.  A full decontamination area was set up at the site to be used if necessary.

The hazard was reduced using absorbent materials and the area was cleared after about 5 hours.  Plastics Unlimited of Preston, the company leasing the building, will be responsible for cleanup.
