Memorial Day travel expected to increase

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- AAA expects the number of people traveling this Memorial Day weekend to increase from the previous year according to projections released this week.

AAA estimates a 5.4 percent increase this year, taking the total number of Americans traveling this weekend to 32.1 million.

Although gas prices have increased about 85 cents from last year, 87 percent of those taking a vacation are expected to be traveling by motor vehicle, while 6.7 percent of travelers are expected to travel by airplane.

Although many numbers have changed from last year, approximate distance traveled by those taking trips and hotel room prices have barely moved.  AAA estimates that the average American will travel 626 miles this year, only two more miles than last year.  Travelers may also see a maximum of a one percent decrease in hotel room rates.

Weekend car rental rates have decreased almost 15 percent from last year while airfares remain about the same.
