DNR encouraging safe boating on Memorial Day weekend

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Saturday marks the unofficial start of summer -- and boating season.  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources expects busy boat ramps this Memorial Day weekend.  It will be the first time on the water in 2010 for many families.

"Boating is a fun, relaxing activity and with all the traffic that we expect for the weekend, we are asking boaters to go through their safety equipment and check their lights before going to the ramp," said Susan Stocker, boating law administrator and education coordinator for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.

With good weather in the forecast, the DNR is expecting Iowa's lakes to be packed.  The organization has placed five thirty-second safety and etiquette videos on its website encouraging safe boating.

"These videos are simple reminders of the dos and don'ts of boating in Iowa," Stocker said. "They don't replace knowing the boating rules, but serve as a helpful reminder of Iowa laws and boating etiquette."

More than 280,000 owners have registered boats in Iowa.  To view the DNR's video reminders, click here.
