Parkersburg prepares to dedicate new Veterans Memorial

PARKERSBURG (KWWL) Korea, Vietnam, World War II, conflicts involving Americans are on display at a new Veterans Memorial in Parkersburg.

So far, the granite monuments are inscribed with more than one thousand names of people from the Aplington-Parkersburg area who served our country.

"It's wonderful. It's magnificent. It's beautiful," said Duane Anderson.

Plans for the monument started about a year ago. It was a goal of the American Legion Post 285.

"So many good things have gone on in Parkersburg since the tornado and this is definitely a good addition. Plus, we definitely have to remember all those that fought in our wars and went to service for us," said Herman Luhring with American Legion Post 285.

Those with the American Legion said the "bookcase" design is one-of-a-kind. The total cost is more than $200,000. To date, about $183,000 is collected.

"We never thought we'd get that much, but people are real generous. Some donated money. Some donated their time. We have to thank JJ Construction and also Arends Landscaping, they did a wonderful job and they donated their labor," said Duane Anderson with American Legion Post 285.

Fittingly, the memorial will be dedicated on the day we remember all those who served our country. The public is invited to Parkersburg's Memorial Day service.

It's at the Veterans Memorial Building at 9 a.m. The dedication follows at 10 a.m.
