Accused kidnapper appears in court

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The man accused of kidnapping a Cedar Rapids convenience store clerk made his initial court appearance Tuesday morning.

Keith Van Elson, Jr., 54, showed no emotion as appeared via video from the Linn County Jail.

Elson is facing 1st Degree Kidnapping and 1st Degree Sexual Abuse charges stemming from the May 17th incident.

According to police, Amanda Daniel, 19, was kidnapped from the Kwik Shop at 1001 1st Avenue West at around 4:00 a.m. on May 17th.

After a seven hour search, police say they found Daniel barricaded in a bathroom inside Elson's apartment.

Elson was found in the living room with a stab wound to the chest.

He was being treated at St. Luke's Hospital until Monday when he was released and immediately arrested.

Elson is being held in the Linn County Jail on $100,000 bond for the kidnapping charge and $50,000 on the sexual abuse charge.

The judge also ordered that Elson have no contact with Daniel.

Elson's preliminary hearing is set for June 4, 2010 at 8:30 a.m.
