The EF-5 tornado of May 25th, 2008


PARKERSBURG (KWWL) -- May 25, 2008, an EF-5 tornado changed the lives of thousands of eastern Iowans and caused millions of dollars worth of damage.

It first touched down two miles south of Aplington at 4:48 p.m.  It was three-quarters of a mile wide when it hit Parkersburg just before five.  Next hit was New Hartford at 5:09.  It then grew to a width of one-point-two miles north of Dunkerton.  The tornado lifted just before Buchanan County.

The half mile wide tornado destroyed 282 homes and 22 businesses in Parkersburg, including the high school.  From there, it went on to destroy homes on the northern side of New Hartford.  Eight people died as a result of the storm.

It was just the third EF-5 tornado in the last ten years in the United States.

After the storm, Butler County received nearly $24 million in state and federal recovery assistance.
