Cedar Rapids man officially charged in kidnapping of store clerk

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Keith Van Elson, Jr., the man accused of kidnapping Amanda Daniel from the Kwik Shop at 1001 1st Avenue West in Cedar Rapids last week, has been arrested and formally charged.

Police say Elson, 54, was released from St. Luke's Hospital at around 2:00 Monday afternoon and immediately placed under arrest.

He is charged with First Degree Kidnapping.

Amanda Daniel, 19, was forced out of the convenience store where she worked just before 4:00 a.m. on Monday, May 17th.

About seven hours later, police say they found Daniel barricaded in a bathroom at Elson's apartment.

Police say Elson was in the living room with a stab wound to the chest.

He is being held at the Linn County Jail.

The family of Amanda Daniel released the following statement through the Cedar Rapids Police Department:

"The family would like the public to know that Amanda Daniel is a loving and caring young woman that likes to make people smile. She is an amazing and strong woman who is a survivor. The family is very proud of her will to survive. And the family hopes that what happened to Amanda will be a lesson to other victims to turn their fear into the determination to live.  The family will continue to surround Amanda with the love and support to help her through this time in her life."
