Des Moines nears completion of riverfront projects

DES MOINES (AP) -- About six years after work began, crews in Des Moines are nearing completion of a roughly $70 million transformation of the banks of the Des Moines River.

Work on the Principal Riverwalk began in 2004, and during that time, the city opened an outdoor ice skating rink, turned a dilapidated railroad bridge into a pedestrian span, built a garden adjacent to the City Hall, created a new small park and linked riverfront paved trails to a regional trail system.

A couple of the most high-profile additions will be completed soon as the Center Street Bridge opens for pedestrians and bicyclists this summer and work is under way on a plaza and building on Court Avenue with restrooms on the ground level and a cafe above, overlooking the river.
