Eye of the Needle helps those in need

WATERLOO (KWWL) A non-profit organization is doing its best to provide clothing and household items to those in need.

Eye of the Needle began in 2006 and received non-profit status last year. But the founder said many people still don't know the organization exists.

Patricia King started Eye of the Needle at a Waterloo church. Now, she operates in the First National Building on Sycamore Street in Waterloo.

Eye of the Needle offers items to those in need for free.

"We give them dishes, we have small appliances, people received vacuum cleaners," said Patricia King.

People who need items call or just show up. All that's required is filling out an application. No one gets turned away.

King said the space isn't very big, but it serves its purpose. She hopes to expand when she can afford it.

"We serve homeless people, we have people from the residential facility, we have people who are working, but they're not making a lot of money and they need uniforms and things for work," said King.

King makes every effort to give people what they need. She even got a motorized wheelchair to a woman with Polio. When asked why… her answer is simple.

"Because there's such a great need," she said.

Amanda Holmes visited for the first time to find clothes for her two children.

"Because it helps people who have nothing get something and gives us a place of security," said Holmes.

Patricia King said last year eye of the needle served more than 400 people.

"Lots of people are very appreciative," said King.

King said the need for clothing and other items really grew after the flood, and she's just happy to do her part to help.

Eye of the Needle is open Monday through Friday. It's open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. except Tuesday, when it's open 1:30 to 4.

She's accepting clients and donations. For more information, you can call Patricia King at 319-215-6151.
