Waterloo fifth grader working to get poem published

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- In just a few weeks, school will be out and there are quite a few children out there itching to get out and play, but all one Waterloo fifth grader wants to do is write.

Ajla Dizdarevic from Black Hawk Elementary wrote a poem that won a contest at her school.  The poem is called "I see it, too."

It's written from the perspective of a child watching Martin Luther King Junior's historic 1969 speech.

"There was a contest going on at our school and it was about Martin Luther King Junior Day for Black History Month, so I wrote I see it too. It just came to me, so that's how I ended up writing it," Dizdarevic said.

Ajla's family says they're working on getting the piece published into an illustrated children's book.  Ajla will be reading one of her poems at Black Hawk Elementary's closing ceremony Friday June 4th.
