Waverly Fire Truck Heads to Haiti

WAVERLY (KWWL) -- Four months after a massive earthquake struck the small Caribbean country of Haiti, the people there are still struggling.

One eastern Iowa fire department is hoping to make a difference with a big donation.

On Friday morning volunteer firefighters with the Waverly Fire Department packed up one of the department's old fire trucks.

The truck was put up for sale, but when the department didn't get any offers fire officials decided to donate the truck and some old equipment to earthquake stricken country.

"Our fire fighters are top notch. We're all volunteers so we know what it's like to need and want equipment and to be able to send this over there and to do a substantial amount of good is just paramount. It's hard to explain how important it is," said Fire Chief Dennis Happel.

The fire truck will be making its way to Florida with the help of the John Deere Waterloo Tractor Works, and Warren Transport. The International Firefighters Assistance Relief will make sure the truck gets to Haiti.
