Does It Really Work: Gopher

IOWA CITY (KWWL)-- The Deluxe Gopher II promises get to those hard to reach objects without bending, climbing or straining, but the question is, does it really work?

To test out the product's effectiveness and versatility, we set up five stations in our Iowa City newsroom demanding different tasks.

Participants went from station to station, picking up everything from keys lodged in ceiling tiles to changing a light bulb.  The participants were timed on their way through this obstacle course, and penalized five seconds, for a dropped item.

Our first volunteer Jenna had little problem getting through the first three stations.  She did slightly struggle with an item stuck behind the refrigerator.  Jenna finished strong by changing a light bulb with the product.  Her time was 1:44.

Overall, she was impressed with its effectiveness.

"It surprisingly worked a lot better than I thought it was going to.  Especially with the small items, grabbing the keys like it did, it really did a good job."

Our second volunteer, Tom, ripped through the course in a time of 1:15.  He says he doesn't have much of a need for a product like the Gopher, but does see its value.

"I thought it was pretty good and I was actually surprised the suction cups were delicate with the light bulb," Tom said.

Kathy, a maintenance worker for the last 11 years, tested the Gopher as our expert tester.

She says the product picked up items well, but worried about the stress repeated use would put on the hands.

"If you're going to use it on an everyday basis like I do, you would be getting arthritis or tendentious in your hand because it is a very stiff product to grip, but it seems to be picking up everything as well as the one I do use," Kathy said.

Based on the feedback we got from our volunteers, we thought the Gopher was an above average product.  We gave it a letter grade of a 'B.'
