Sand Mandala ends following Dalai Lama's visit

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- A sand mandala built for the Dalai Lama's visit to Iowa was destroyed in a ceremony at the University of Northern Iowa on Wednesday.

Two Tibetan monks built the sculpture grain by grain in preparation for the religious leader's visit.

The sand mandala was on display at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center in Cedar Falls.

The piece of art was destroyed to symbolize the nature of life.

"Creating a sand mandala is an easy way to experience this form of mindfulness and creativity. The process is therapeutic and provides an opportunity for the mind chatter to stop," Tibetan monk, Geshe Thupten Dorjee said.

This is the second sand mandala the school has built. One was created on the campus last April.
