Teen faces attempted murder charges in Adams County shootout

ADAMS COUNTY (KWWL)-- Authorities are releasing more information following a shootout in Adams County Monday.

The Division of Criminal Investigation says 16 year old Daniel Beardsley assaulted a staff member and another resident of Clarinda Academy before escaping from custody using a stolen truck.

Just before 5 p.m. Monday, authorities say Beardsley shot Matthew Herring in the right arm and stomach as he entered his Brooks home. Adams County Deputy Jason Swanson responded to the home after a report of shots fired, and when he arrived, he, too, was shot at by Beardsley.

Deputy Swanson returned fire as he retreated from the home, and Beardsley continued to fire at the officer. More authorities arrived on the seen, and the shooter continued to fire at officers. Beardsley barricaded himself inside the home until an Iowa State Patrol negotiator convinced him to surrender, which he did around 8:30 p.m. He has been charged with two counts of attempted murder.

Herring was airlifted to an Omaha, Nebraska hospital. His condition has not been released. Deputy Swanson was treated for minor injuries.
