IOWA CITY (AP) -- Authorities are holding a man in the Johnson County Jail in connection with an ATM scam they say netted about $25,000.

According to authorities, security cameras recorded 23-year-old Thomas J. Harris making deposits using closed account checks. They say Harris also made withdrawals from accounts belonging to people who later reported their ATM cards and personal identification numbers stolen.

According to police, Harris recruited people to provide him their ATM cards and ID numbers with the agreement they would receive half the money gained from the scam.

Authorities also say Harris, whose address is unknown, used ATM cards to fraudulently purchase $3,000 in Moneygram money orders.

Harris, who police say also goes by Jamal and Jermaine Harris, has been charged with first-degree theft and money laundering. He is being held in lieu of $45,000 bond.
