Romney backing Branstad

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Former presidential candidate Mitt Romney is endorsing Terry Branstad in the Republican primary for governor.

Romney announced his endorsement Tuesday morning in a statement that credited Branstad for serving Iowa well during four terms as governor in the 1980s and 1990s. Romney's political action committee also has contributed $10,000 to Branstad's campaign.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, spent plenty of time and money in Iowa during his presidential campaign. Despite this investment, he finished second in the Iowa presidential caucuses in 2008.

Branstad is running against businessman Bob Vander Plaats and state Rep. Rod Roberts for the GOP nomination. The winner will face Democratic Gov. Chet Culver.
