CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet is scheduled to be in Cedar Falls Tuesday.

His Holiness is both the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet. In 1950, he assumed full political power after China's invasion of Tibet in 1949.

In 1989, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent struggle for the liberation of Tibet.

Tuesday, His Holiness is taking part in two events at the University of Northern Iowa. A panel discussion in the morning and as guest speaker in the afternoon.

Security is tight. UNI Police are working with the state department.

His Holiness is scheduled to take part in a panel discussion at 9:30 Tuesday morning focused on educating for a non-violent world.

Besides His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the panel features Art Erickson the founder and CEO of Urban Ventures Leadership Foundation; Judy Jeffrey the former director of the Iowa Department of Education; Jackson Katz the founder and director of Mentors in Violence Prevention and Lee Rainey the president of C-Level Consulting.

UNI has been prepping for this event for quite awhile. A spokesperson said this visit is part of an effort to invite world leaders to UNI.

"We feel it's vital to stress education so when His Holiness the Dalai Lama is here he will be talking about the importance of education and its role in helping people make the world a better place to live in," said Jim O'Conner with UNI.

Two Tibetan monks worked to construct a sand Mandala inside the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center to welcome His Holiness to UNI.

The panel discussion should go from about 9:30 to 11 a.m. Then from 2 to 3:30 p.m. His Holiness will give the keynote address on "The Power of Education."

We'll have Team Seven coverage on our news at noon, 5 and 6.
