Gardeners ''dig in'' at CF community garden

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL)-- Local gardeners dug in Sunday at the grand opening of the Cedar Falls Community Garden.

This new community garden is planted on land bought out by FEMA after the 2008 flood. Last year it was nothing but grass until several community members had an idea.

"Cedar Falls needs a community garden because we have so much land that was underused after the flood and people live in shady yards and people live in apartments and as a community we can come together and garden together," garden co-founder Grant Schultz said.

The collaborative effort was led by local non-profit, Green Iowa Americorps.

The group designed and landscaped the plot with some help from the city.  Most of the materials used were salvaged from flooded buildings.

Thirty-five garden plots are available to Cedar Falls residents.

There will also be a demonstration plot, and produce from that will be donated to the Northeast Iowa Food Bank.
