Child playing with lighter starts CR house fire

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL)-- The Red Cross is assisting a family of six after a fire damaged their home Sunday night.

A neighbor reported flames coming from a second level bedroom window in the 2400 block of Franklin Avenue Northeast in Cedar Rapids around 7:15 p.m.

Cedar Rapids fire crews encountered heavy smoke as they made their way upstairs, where the blaze started.

Five people were home at the time of the fire. One of the children noticed the fire and alerted others in the home. The family's cat died in the fire.

Fire officials say smoke alarms were installed in the home, but the batteries were missing.

An investigation determined the fire was caused by a child playing with a lighter.
