Young Arena expansion moving forward

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Waterloo Black Hawks will soon have more space thanks to a project being undertaken by the team and the city.

Paul Huting, Waterloo Leisure Services Director, says construction of the 1,200 square foot addition is expected to get underway in July and be completed by November.

The bump-out on the southwest end of the 15-year old building will be connected to both the Black Hawks offices and locker room, giving more space to each.

Huting also says it will create an identifiable entrance for those doing business with the Black Hawks.

He also says that they can easily expand the addition upwards, creating a second level if needed.

The $250,000 project will be paid for using city bond funds and donations.

The Black Hawks are also putting forward $25,000 for the project.

INVISION Architecture of Waterloo designed the addition and will oversee the construction at a cost of $25,000.

Huting says it's very important to help the Black Hawks stay successful because they are the primary tenant of the building and their success allows the arena to operate in the black without any taxpayer subsidies.

He adds that the added space will create a better environment for the team which will help in recruiting.
