Former Coralville employees indicted for accessing Obama records

CORALVILLE (KWWL)-- Nine people once employed at the Vangent Coralville office are being charged with unlawfully accessing President Barack Obama's student loan records.

Indictments charge that the individuals 'intentionally exceeded authorized access to a computer, obtaining information from a department and agency of the United States.'

The indictments reference this activity happened between July 2007 and March 2009.

Vangent, Inc.,  a U.S. Department of Education contractor in Iowa, released the following statement:

"An investigation identified a number of Vangent employees, among others, who inappropriately accessed student loan records. The Vangent employees violated Vangent's security policies and were promptly terminated from the company in June 2009.  Vangent was not the subject of the investigation."

The former employees will be arraigned on May 24.

The charge is punishable by up to one year in prison and a fine of $100,000.
